Gard fine food competition
‘Le Gard, militant du goût’ — and three hundred and sixty-three products to prove it.
The Concours Gard Gourmand brings together the département’s consular chambers — agriculture, commerce and trades — with the Conseil départemental, under the banner ‘Le Gard, militant du goût’. It is held every autumn, over four days.
It is broadly open: artisans, caterers, shopkeepers, restaurateurs and farmers from the Gard compete together. It brings together more than a hundred entrants and over three hundred products, yielding some hundred and thirty medals — gold, silver and bronze — shared among around a hundred artisans.
The products are blind-judged by two panels of four judges across five sensory criteria — sight, touch, smell, taste and retro-olfaction — translated into a score out of twenty. A score of 15/20 is required to qualify for a medal, and a Prix d'Excellence rewards products awarded 20/20.
Its five categories remain fixed, but they are subdivided into ‘product families’ which the committee reconfigures for each edition according to the entries received — a maximum of twenty products per family, and a minimum of four different businesses. The detailed classification of one year therefore does not apply to the next. The Drinks category notably welcomes the département’s breweries and winegrowers.
⚠️ Its vintages are offset: the autumn competition awards medals for the following year’s vintage.
