Official quality sign
AOC
France's mark of recognition — now the mandatory gateway to Europe, and one that falls with it.
The Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée is the national sign, born of the decree-law of 30 July 1935 passed in response to the fraud then undermining the vineyards — the same text created the committee that would become the INAO. It rests on the same requirement as the PDO (AOP): every stage within the same area, according to recognised know-how. Since the arrival of European signs, the two have been closely interlinked: the European Commission grants PDO status to products already recognised as AOC, and a product whose PDO is refused also loses its AOC. Many food products therefore bear both designations, or the PDO alone; AOC remains in sole use for wines.
