Ten thousand samples, fifty-eight countries, six hundred and thirty tasters: a competition born of wine that opened up to cheese, then to charcuterie.
The Concours International de Lyon was originally dedicated to wines, beers and spirits before extending its judging to emblematic products of French and international gastronomy: cheeses and dairy products first, charcuterie more recently. It is held every year in Lyon, at the Cité Internationale.
The tasting session takes place at the end of November and brings together nearly 630 tasters — industry professionals and discerning consumers — under the supervision of an independent bailiff. Across all categories, more than ten thousand samples from around sixty countries are judged. On the cheese and dairy side, some 2,200 products compete, with nearly a third leaving with a gold or silver medal; on the charcuterie side, 780 compete in the same proportion.
The products are judged blind and rewarded with a gold or silver medal. In addition, there are special trophies, including a supreme trophy honouring the best cheese across all origins.
Wines, beers and spirits continue to be judged there: they make up the bulk of the samples, with cheeses and charcuterie accounting for only around three thousand.
